The Interview

If they were trying to stand their ground and blow a rasberry at North Korea, they'd just release the damn movie. As it is right now it's just the worst possible message/gesture of appeasement to a stupid little tyrant.

I think more likely the commercial rotation just hasn't figured out what to fucking do about this trailer yet.

ugh, this is so depressing...come on Hollywood...you spineless bitches...kind of has me at the exact opposite of the USA!USA!USA! woohoo Freedom of Speech mood I'd like to be in

This is like that South Park 201 situation all over again.

*sigh*

the villain of Team America World Police is Kim Jong-il...North Korea didn't pull any of this shit then...I think it's because the presence of "glorious leader" in the movie wasn't heavily publicized as its puppet sex/making mock of American military hegemony was...(although they did make Kin Jong-il an alien cockroach)

this seems appropriate though

"it's kind of sirey, but not rerey, because it's filling my body with rage"

Yeah, that's about where I'm at.

Opinion: Stop Rating Demos, It's Unfair...To Completed Games

I guess that's kind of a valid point...it still pisses me off that anyone might reject games with such a broad brush, but you make a good point.

Ah well, straight to DVD. That said, it'll probably see higher-than-average DVD sales due to the controversy so I'm sure Sony won't mind too much (even if they don't get the first-day cinema sales).

Insanely enough they said they have no plans for releasing it on DVD, VOD, or anything.

I can scarcely imagine what the people involved with making this movie must be feeling right now to be thrown under the bus by corporate cowardice at the last moment.

This whole thing just feels so flagrantly like a 'the bad guys won' situation. It's really infuriating and depressing.

The Interview

This is INSANE.

I can't believe this is actually happening. Since when were we scared of North Korea? Since when was our reaction to their threats anything but a heart national LOL?

My gut says that this story can't be real but I can't find any evidence it isn't it's being carried everywhere and the film's Wikipedia page reflects it too.

This seems like a really good opportunity to clear some stuff up so here goes.

"If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all."

Now obviously I don't think that Hatred is classy or tasteful or "nice" or a good idea. I don't think that anyone here thinks that, to be honest. But I would defend very strongly Hatred's right to exist and to make it to the marketplace versus those who would censor it.

If you don't like Hatred and you don't personally want to buy it, that makes you a reasonable and sane, well-adjusted human being. Like if you would vote 'No' for Hatred on Steam Greenlight, I wouldn't call you an SJW. The only camp I could lump you in based on that is "probably not a sociopath".

If you would petition for Hatred to be removed from Steam so that no one is allowed to buy it (as many have actually attempted to do), that makes you a censorious SJW douche. Let people make their own decisions, you are not collectively society's mom.

It's something you have to consider when you make a game with touchy subjects - there are going to be people who don't want to play it and will be very vocally against it because it will offend or hurt others.

Now that's a more interesting subject - dealing with using controversial topics in your games and how you make that choice, deal with the reactions and handle the design aspects of such.

Don't want to play it? Fine. Vocally against it? Also fine. Agitating to pull it from the marketplace? Censorship. Anyway it seems clear enough that the Hatred devs didn't just consider how much outrage this game would generate, they banked on it and then rode it all the way to the bank. Basically, this game is such a publicity stunt shock tactic that the Streisand effect is their business model!

The devs of Hatred are plainly aggressively disinterested in engaging the subject matter in a thoughtful or tasteful way. There's nothing wrong with that. I mean you can say "that makes me less likely to play this game" and that is totally fine too. But it is not morally or ethically wrong. It's just tasteless.

I agree that "how to deal with extreme subject matter artfully and tastefully" is an interesting topic in design and one I find endlessly fascinating. It is just that the guys making Hatred clearly don't give any shits about this and I respect their right to give no shits about being tasteful, sensitive, or artistic. It's a strange thing to say, but just being a boorish loud socially tone-deaf jerk in a huge, public arena takes a surprising amount of courage nowadays. (Those of you not opposed to cheap shots will probably take some here.) Idk back when everyone was being crass and oblivious and offensive and annoying it was really grating but now that type of odiously iconoclastic IDGAF attitude has become a real rarity.

Should a game be completely transparent with its mechanic?

No, not usually. For many reasons--in the case of the more mechanically complex games, just not overwhelming the player is something important to remember--a bit of opacity is a good thing. But I do think it's a good idea to at least think about issues of transparency vs. opacity during development.

The Screenshot Topic Returns

(yes the whole game is 20 tiles wide throughout, that's not changing)

thought i was the only one who did weird shit like that.

Minutes to Midnight

wow dude you make lotsa games real fast

So this charming game is (shocker)developing quite a bit of CONTROVERSY. And it's been flicked on and off of Steam Greenlight something like four times in the last 48 hours or something...I can't even keep track. For reasons I am not sure I entirely get, the entire fight over whether Hatred is allowed on steam or not seems to have become another battleground between SJWs and the #GamerGate set.

Yesterday, I projectile vomited.

The absolute worst was that some of it came out my nose. I think you guys will all agree...that is one of the worst feelings possible in human experience. Anyway thanks for the well-wishing I certainly hope the vomiting is at an end but I am not holding my breath.
